Blockbuster drugs going generic
Consumer acceptance of generic drugs has grown substantially in recent years, and the industry is responding with more and more blockbuster drugs going off-patent. Generic drugs now account for about 12 percent of the nation's $250 billion a year in drug spending and more than 53 percent of prescriptions filled. This year, $8.1 billion in brand-name drugs will go generic. Recently, the Food and Drug Administration approved a number of new generic drugs:
