Literacy Luncheon
A man who overcame extreme poverty and issues of low self-esteem to become a world-renowned physician will be the guest speaker for the Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council’s (GPLC) 2007 Leaders for Literacy Luncheon. Benjamin Carson, Sr., MD, the director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Medical Institution in Baltimore, Md., will be the featured speaker for the event, which is scheduled for October 17, at the Omni William Penn Hotel in downtown Pittsburgh. Dr. Carson performed the first separation of Siamese twins joined at the back of the head and also the first intrauterine shunt for a hydrocephalic twin. Dr. Carson – who was raised by a single mother with only a third-grade education – has been recognized by the Library of Congress as one of America’s 89 “Living Legends.” UPMC Health Plan is a Platinum Sponsor for the 2007 Leaders for Literacy Luncheon. Diane Holder, president of UPMC Health Plan, is the honorary chairperson for the event, which will focus on health literacy. The Leaders for Literacy Luncheon provides an opportunity for corporate and civic leaders to demonstrate their commitment to creating a stronger workforce and a stronger community. For 25 years, GPLC has been a leader in efforts to increase the literacy of people in Western Pennsylvania. Tickets to the luncheon and reception are $75. In addition, a limited number of tickets will be available for $25 for those who can only attend the lecture. The reception will begin at 11:30 a.m. and the luncheon starts at noon. For information on tickets and the time of the lecture, contact Suzie Brindle at 412-661-7323, ext. 109. The deadline for reservations is October 5. Sponsorship opportunities are also available for $1,750, $2,500, $5,000, and $10,000. Advertising opportunities range from $50 to $1,500. For information on sponsorship and advertising, contact Maria Polinsky at 412-661-7323, ext. 108. Or e-mail her at mpolinsky@gplc.org. |
