Concern about fraud prompts letter to members
Recently, UPMC for Life sent its members a letter to alert them about possible fraudulent activity. UPMC for Life received several complaints from members about unsolicited telephone calls. The calls were from people who claimed to be representatives of UPMC for Life. During the course of the conversation, the caller requested personal information, such as bank account, credit card, and Social Security numbers. In some instances, the callers identified themselves as UPMC for Life Health Care Concierges. In many instances, the callers promised free items of some kind in exchange for the information requested. It is important for you to know that no representative from UPMC for Life would ever initiate such a phone call, nor would any of our representatives ever request personal information in this way. After UPMC for Life learned about the phone calls, we immediately sent a letter to all of our members, stating that our Health Care Concierges have all the personal information about you that is needed for our business purposes. We also stated that no request for additional information of that kind would ever be requested in any phone call that any member would receive from UPMC for Life. We sent the letters because the people making those calls were attempting to commit identity theft. It is important that our members be aware that they could become victims of identity theft. UPMC for Life representatives, such as your Health Care Concierge, will on occasion call you to inquire about your health care needs. However, at no time would a concierge request any personal information. If you believe that someone has attempted to obtain personal information illegally, or if you believe that your personal information has been stolen, contact UPMC Health Plan Special Investigations Unit Fraud Hotline. The number is 1-866-FRAUD-01. Members may also write to the Special Investigations Unit at: UPMC Health Plan |
