Quitting smoking — first step on the road to better health

Quitting smoking is one of the most important steps you can take to improve your health. Not only will you reduce your risk of developing diseases, such as heart disease and cancer, but you’ll feel better and be healthier. You will also have more energy and be able to breathe easier. If you are pregnant, quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for your baby. Quitting increases your chances of having a baby born on time and with normal lungs and a healthy weight. If you are ready to quit, follow these tips:

  • Set a quit date — two weeks ahead is best.
  • Talk to your doctor — he or she can provide support and advice.
  • Know your triggers — moods, feelings, and places can make you want to smoke. How will you deal with these issues?
  • Build a support system — quitting is easier when you have support from family and friends.
  • Learn to handle stress — stress often causes people to start smoking again.
  • Reward yourself — Put aside your cigarette money each day. Then treat yourself to something special to celebrate your success.

UPMC for You members have coverage for counseling services to support their attempts to quit smoking. The MyHealth Ready to Quit Line is available toll-free at 1-800-807-0751. The line is open Monday through Thursday from 8a.m. to 7:30p.m., Friday from 8a.m. to 4:30p.m., and Saturday from 9a.m. to 3p.m.

You also can use Ready, Set, Stop! Online, at no cost. This interactive tool will help guide you through the quitting process in ten sessions.
