Do you know all the risks of alcohol use?

Many people drink alcohol occasionally. Others drink moderate amounts of alcohol on a more regular basis. Drinking at these levels usually is not associated with health risks. But did you know that even moderate drinking, under certain circumstances, can be risky? The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism has identified significant health risks associated with alcohol use.

Drinking alcohol while taking certain medications, even some over-the-counter medications, can be especially hazardous to your health. Alcohol consumption above moderate levels for a long period of time can lead to increased risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, pancreatitis, and certain forms of cancer. Other risks associated with alcohol abuse include serious family, work, social, and legal problems.

If you are concerned about how much alcohol you drink, talk to your doctor. You can also complete an online self-screening to see if alcohol use may be a problem for you. Just go to the Community Care Behavioral Health Organization website at www.ccbh.com. Select the UPMC Health Plan commercial members section and then select the “Informational Articles” link. For more information on alcohol use or for help with a behavioral health referral, call 1-888-251-0083. TTY users can call 1-877-877-3580. Licensed behavioral health clinicians are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
