Monongahela Valley Hospital Joins UPMC Health Plan's Network PITTSBURGH, Pa., (July 26, 2002) - UPMC Health Plan and Monongahela Valley Hospital have announced an agreement that adds the hospital to the Health Plan's growing network of contracted facilities and physicians. The agreement, which was effective on July 1, 2002, gives UPMC Health Plan members full access to Monongahela Valley Hospital, a 231-bed full-service hospital with a 180-member medical staff and more than 40 medical specialties. Also a party to the agreement is Vale-U-Health Inc., the hospital's Physician Hospital Organization (PHO). "The Health Plan's agreement with Mon Valley Hospital is very good news for UPMC Health Plan members who live in the mid-Monongahela Valley," Patricia A. Liebman, UPMC Health Plan chief executive officer. "Our members now have full access to the high quality of health care this facility offers." The agreement will benefit Monongahela Valley Hospital and its medical staff, UPMC Health Plan, and most importantly, patients, according to Anthony M. Lombardi, Monongahela Valley Hospital president and chief executive officer. "This contract affords us the opportunity to meet the needs of people in our community who are enrolled in UPMC Health Plan in providing quality health care that is easily accessible and close to home," Lombardi said. The agreement means Monongahela Valley Hospital is now a participating provider of all the UPMC Health Plan commercial products and also for UPMC for Life (Medicare HMO), and Best Health Care of Western Pennsylvania (Medicaid). Monongahela Valley Hospital was formed in 1972 when Memorial Hospital of Monongahela and Charleroi-Monessen Hospital were consolidated. The hospital has grown to become the largest employer in the mid-Monongahela Valley and the second largest employer in Washington County. A subsidiary of Mon-Vale Health Resources Inc., Monongahela Valley Hospital offers comprehensive oncology services as well as a full range of medical care services that includes cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation services, critical care, emergency medicine, outpatient diagnostic centers and state-of-the-art cancer care technology at its Sweeney-Melenyzer Regional Cancer Center. A $10 million expansion of the cancer center is under way and includes the addition of two floors to the facility. UPMC Health Plan is among the fastest growing HMOs in the country, providing enhanced access HMO, PPO, POS and other health benefits products to some 376,000 persons. Headquartered in Pittsburgh, the Health Plan is a subsidiary of UPMC Health System, which has 19 hospitals throughout western Pennsylvania.
