Hamot Joins UPMC Health Plan Network

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (October 15, 2003) - UPMC Health Plan and Hamot Health Foundation have reached an agreement that adds Hamot Medical Center of Erie to the Health Plan's growing network of contracted facilities and physicians.

Beginning November 1, 2003, Hamot Medical Center will be a participating provider for UPMC Health Plan's commercial products. Hamot Medical Center is a 336-bed tertiary care facility located on Erie's Bayfront.

The hospital offers comprehensive, integrated, state-of-the-art health care. The facility is supported by an active staff of more than 200 physicians representing most medical specialties, as well as more than 2,000 nurses, technologists, therapists, and other personnel.

"The Health Plan's agreement is good news for UPMC Health Plan members who live in northwest Pennsylvania," said Patricia A. Liebman, UPMC Health Plan chief executive officer.

Liebman said that the addition of Hamot makes the Health Plan's commercial products even more attractive to employers and employees.

Hamot has become a premier provider in a number of medical specialties, including cardiopulmonary, neuroscience, orthopaedic, trauma, and woman/child health services. In addition to the medical center, Hamot Health Foundation includes Hamot's primary care physician network, an extensive home health care program (Great Lakes Home Healthcare), and comprehensive outpatient diagnostic, treatment, and preventive services.

"I am pleased that UPMC Health Plan has chosen Hamot as one of the Health Plan's preferred providers," said John T. Malone, president and chief executive officer of Hamot Health Foundation. "Many patients in the region are insured under UPMC Health Plan and, until now, were not able to access Hamot. Beginning November 1, all the expertise and advanced technology provided by Hamot is available to them.

"That is good news for everyone."

UPMC Health Plan, with over 400,000 members, is a subsidiary of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC).

Hamot brings the number of hospitals in the Health Plan's network to 82. In addition to Hamot, the Health Plan's commercial network in northwest Pennsylvania also includes Saint Vincent Health Center and Millcreek Community Hospital in Erie County; Meadville Medical Center in Crawford County; Warren General Hospital in Warren County; UPMC Horizon and United Community Hospital in Mercer County; and UPMC Northwest in Venango County.
