Karing for Kids

This holiday season, UPMC Health Plan employees played Santa to more than 100 children in need through the Karing for Kids Holiday Project.

UPMC Health Plan and UPMC NeighborLink, UPMC's volunteer recognition program, partnered with Children, Youth and Families (CYF) and the Allegheny Intermediate Unit's (AIU) Homeless Children's Initiative to ensure children around the Pittsburgh area received holiday gifts.

Health Plan employees had the opportunity to buy a gift for a specific boy or girl whose name was supplied by CYF, or to donate a gift for a homeless child under the sponsorship of AIU.

The Karing for Kids Project, which ran from Tuesday, December 2, through Thursday, December 11, was a huge success. Health Plan employees responded generously, some by donating gifts for more than one child.

UPMC NeighborLink is a systemwide initiative designed to support, encourage, and reward UPMC staff for their community volunteerism.

The Allegheny County Office of Children, Youth and Families mandate is to protect the county's children from abuse and neglect. CYF's mission is to provide a safe home for children either by assuring safety within the child's own family, or by finding an adoptive home or another permanent setting for children who cannot be reunited with their family.

The Allegheny Intermediate Unit is an educational service agency supporting area schools, families, and communities. Through research, partnerships, and collaborative leadership, AIU provides instruction and services designed to meet the needs of the area's diverse community of learners.
