UPMC Health Plan Donates $40,000 to Bethlehem Haven

PITTSBURGH, (March 6, 2006) - UPMC Health Plan is donating $40,000 to Bethlehem Haven's 902 Health Clinic, in recognition of the clinic's excellent work and its commitment to community health.

The donation matches a grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and allows the clinic to fulfill its mission of providing health care services to homeless women and men.

"UPMC Health Plan shares with the Haven a commitment to support innovative health delivery programs throughout Western Pennsylvania," said Diane P. Holder, president of UPMC Health Plan and the UPMC Insurance Services Division.

Ms. Holder said the donation was being made in recognition of Edward J. Donnelly, Jr., MD, who recently was presented with the prestigious Jefferson Award for his ongoing support of the work of the 902 Health Clinic. Dr. Donnelly is a member of the board of directors for both the Health Plan and Bethlehem Haven.

The Jefferson Awards were established in 1972 and are considered the equivalent of Nobel Prizes for community service. The awards are designed to encourage and honor individuals for their achievements and contributions through public and community services.

"We are deeply grateful for `EJ' and his faithful commitment to the Haven, and also to UPMC Health Plan's support for our programs in his name," said Marilyn Sullivan, RN, executive director of Bethlehem Haven.

"It is a privilege to be able to honor an individual like `EJ,' whose presence has resulted in significant contributions to both Bethlehem Haven and UPMC Health Plan," said Ms. Holder.

Bethlehem Haven is a non-profit organization that has provided shelter, support, rehabilitation, and safety for thousands of homeless women for more than 20 years. In November 2005, the organization was recognized for its collaborative and innovative achievements when it received the Forbes Funds 2005 Wishart Award for excellence in nonprofit management.
