"Handyman" Joe Negri Honored With Mayor's Proclaimation at MCG Third Grade Jazz Concert On Monday, April 24, 2006, at 11 a.m., Mayor Bob O'Connor will recognize Pittsburgh legend Joe Negri - best known as "Handyman" Negri, from Mister Rogers' Neighborhood - with a proclamation in honor of his contribution to music-based youth education. WHAT:Manchester Craftsmen's Guild will conduct three days of interactive jazz concerts for approximately 2,500 elementary students, April 24 - 26, 2006. Third Grade Jazz, sponsored by UPMC Health Plan, will consist of short performances by local jazz educators - including Joe Negri. With audience participation components and a child-focused structure, Third Grade Jazz provides a unique and successful formula for a memorable and meaningful introductory jazz music experience. WHEN: April 24, 2006 - 11 a.m. WHERE: Manchester Craftsmen's Guild 1815 Metropolitan Street Pittsburgh, PA 15233 WHO: Mayor Bob O'Connor Joe Negri, Jazz Guitarist; "Handyman" Negri from the PBS series, Mister Rogers' Neighborhood Diane Holder, President, UPMC Health Plan Pittsburgh Public School Children Mayor O'Connor will present the proclamation to Joe Negri, in honor of his contribution to music-based youth education. Negri will join the core of musicians and perform with the ensemble for the concert. The ensemble will include John Wilson (trumpet and flugelhorn), Mike Tomaro (woodwinds), Jay Ashby (trombone and percussion), Max Leake (piano), Dwayne Dolphin (bass), and Roger Humphries (drums). All of these individuals are professional musicians and educators who have shared their talents with audiences all over the world and welcome the opportunity to perform for these students and share their love of jazz. Diane Holder, president of UPMC Health Plan, referred to the event as a celebration of the successful partnership between the Health Planand Manchester Bidwell Corporation. "UPMC Health Plan is dedicated to the ongoing work that Manchester Bidwell does for the region. "We proudly support Third Grade Jazz as a leading model for programming that makes a positive contribution to youth education." MCG Jazz is thrilled to be able to offer this program to the students. The UPMC Health Plan sponsorship is a prime example of how community-based organizations can work together and create opportunities to enhance arts education and appreciation.
