UPMC Health Plan Makes Extra Effort Ahead of May 15 Medicare Part D Deadline PITTSBURGH (May 10, 2006) - With the May 15 deadline approaching for signing up for the new Medicare prescription drug program, UPMC Health Plan—which offers UPMC for Life, a Medicare Advantage program—is increasing its efforts to educate Medicare beneficiaries and help them choose a plan that best suits their needs. "UPMC Health Plan has put into place a robust plan heading toward the May 15 deadline so that beneficiaries can get the information and support they need to make the right decision for their health care needs," said Catherine Batteer, Vice President of Medicare for UPMC Health Plan.To help Medicare beneficiaries better understand the coverage, UPMC Health Plan scheduled 44 informational sessions throughout Western Pennsylvania during this final week. For information about the times and locations of these sessions, call UPMC Health Plan at 1-877-381-3765. In addition to the seminars, UPMC for Life representatives will take calls every day from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. through May 14, 2006, and from 8 a.m. to midnight on May 15. Medicare beneficiaries who do not sign up for a prescription drug plan may pay a penalty, in the form of a 1 percent premium increase for each month enrollment is delayed past the May 15, 2006 deadline. For example, if someone 70 years old waits until November 2006 to sign up for a prescription drug plan for January 1, 2007, the monthly premium would be 7 percent higher than for someone who signs up by May 15. The May 15 deadline does not apply to persons who are "dual eligibles" (that is, those entitled to Medicare Part A and Part B who also receive Medicaid Assistance).
