America On the Move Campaign Hits the Ground Walking — UPMC Health Plan Joins Effort to Make Pittsburgh Healthiest City in Nation September 11, 2006 — Hit the ground walking Wednesday with local political, television, and fitness personalities for the launch of America on the Move in Pittsburgh, a community-wide initiative to promote active living and healthy eating, sponsored in part by UPMC Health Plan. The walking event, the first outdoor effort to get Pittsburghers moving, will take place from noon to 1 p.m. Sept. 13, beginning at the Allegheny County Courthouse Courtyard, 436 Grant St., and ending at the Market Square stage. County Executive Dan Onorato will be joined by KDKA-TV's Ken Rice and Patrice King Brown to kick off the effort, part of the national America On the Move campaign designed to help Americans prevent weight gain by increasing activity and cutting calories. The free walk will begin at 12:15 p.m., led by Leslie Sansone, "In-Home Walking" program originator and owner of Studio Fitness in New Castle, and Jennifer Antkowiak, formerly with KDKA-TV and now executive director of promotions, marketing, and multimedia for Sansone. "America on the Move in Pittsburgh wants to encourage healthier lifestyles through small steps," says Health Plan President Diane Holder. "By simply taking 2,000 more steps a day and cutting 100 to 200 calories out of your daily diet, you can halt weight gain. The message is simple: Move more; eat a bit less. The health benefits will be long lasting." UPMC Health Plan, along with KDKA-TV, the University of Pittsburgh, Heinz, and Del Monte Foods launched America on the Move in Pittsburgh with a new website on Aug. 28. The site encourages participants to log in daily to record the number of steps they have walked that day, and prompts them to enter their weight each week. Every Monday a new motivational and educational "Step to Better Health" will be posted on the site. The campaign also includes television spots featuring Health Plan president Diane Holder. John M. Jakicic, PhD., Director of the Physical Activity and Weight Management Research Center at the University of Pittsburgh, and a consultant to UPMC Health Plan, said the goal is to make Pittsburgh "the healthiest city in the nation." "This is a call to action," says Jakicic. "We are combining the necessary tools with the implementation steps to help individuals make meaningful lifestyle changes related to activity, diet, and body weight. Through this initiative we are going to have measurable outcomes to track for the first time how we are improving as a community — we will actually know if we are becoming a healthier community." To join the program, visit the America on the Move in Pittsburgh website at www.americaonthemove.org and click "Get Involved Today" to access free tools for tracking and modifying physical activity, eating, and body weight. Under "Individual" select "Full Access." Members of UPMC Health Plan must enter "UPMC" as the registration code for additional tools and information to improve your health. |
