UPMC Health Plan Leads Nation in Breast Cancer Screening for 3rd Year in a Row PITTSBURGH (September 27, 2006) — UPMC Health Plan turned in better results than all other surveyed health plans in the country on breast cancer screening, according to the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA). Breast cancer screening noted in today's NCQA's State of Healthcare Quality Report is an area of particular concern. NCQA's Quality Compass® data used to generate the report show that UPMC Health Plan for the third consecutive year has the highest percentage of female members who have had recommended breast cancer screening. The report states that breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer among American women. In 2006, an estimated 214,000 new cases will be identified. It is the second leading cause of cancer death for women, with an estimated 41,430 deaths this year. Fortunately, breast cancer mortality in women has been recently declining overall, due in part to early detection by screening with mammograms. The report continues a woman living in the United States has a 1 in 7 lifetime risk of developing breast cancer. Mammography can detect approximately 85 percent of breast cancers. Quality Compass, a database of health plan performance that provides specific clinical quality and member experience data, lists clinical measures and reports the percentage of members who received certain care. Quality Compass data will form the basis of national health plan ratings to be released by NCQA and U.S. News & World Report in early November. The Health Plan was ranked No. 20 in the nation a year ago, and highest rated in Pennsylvania, and expects to improve that ranking when the list is published by the news magazine. NCQA is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to improving health care quality. NCQA accredits and certifies a wide range of health care organizations and manages the evolution of HEDIS®, the tool NCQA uses to measure and report on the performance of the nation's health plans.
