UPMC Health Plan Wins Five Communications Awards From National Organization
PITTSBURGH (December 12, 2006) – UPMC Health Plan won five major awards from the League of American Communications Professionals (LACP) in its “2006 Spotlight Awards.” More than 900 companies across the country, both large and small, entered the competition.
The competition was judged by a field of communications professionals affiliated with LACP. Their expertise spans a broad spectrum of PR functions ranging from corporate, executive, and internal communications for Fortune 500 organizations to product, service, and non-profit publicity expertise.
Judging was based on the following criteria: First Impression, Message Clarity, Overall Narrative, Overall Visual Design, Creativity, and Perceived Relevance. All of the components of a communications piece – including the effectiveness of design and the quality of the written copy – were considered in the judging.
The results were as follows:

Gold Award for UPMC Health Plan advertising campaign “What’s Inside.”
(Category: Print – Advertisement/Ad Campaign.)
This print and billboard campaign earned high marks for Creativity (19 out of 20 possible points) and for Clarity (19 of 20). Among the featured messages was: “A network of people committed to you.”

Gold Award for UPMC Health Plan “Smoking Cessation Toolkit.”
(Category: Print – Guide/Tool Kit.)
The toolkit designed to help people quit smoking received a perfect 10 of 10 score for Perceived Relevancy. The toolkit, produced by UPMC Health Plan’s Health Promotion department, ranked 69th overall in LACP’s "Top 100," a ranking that compared entries from all categories.

Silver Award for UPMC Health Plan “Health & Wellness Newsletter.”

This newsletter, which goes to all Health Plan commercial members, received the highest possible score on Creativity – 20 out of 20. Its marks for Clarity and Perceived Relevance were also high (9 of 10). In LACP’s "Top 100," the newsletter finished 41st.

Bronze Award for UPMC Health Plan “Web Site Debut.”

The Health Plan’s redesigned website scored highest in Message Clarity (19 of 20) and Overall Visual Design (9 of 10).

Bronze Award for UPMC Health Plan “Employee Brochure.”
(Category: Print – Brochure.)
The Health Plan brochure, which introduces the Health Plan and its benefits to prospective members, scored highest in Creativity and Clarity – 19 of 20.
In addition, the “Health & Wellness Newsletter” (41st) and the “Smoking Cessation Toolkit” (69th) both placed in the "Top 100 Communications Materials" (out of over 900 entrants), a listing of the highest-scoring submissions regardless of type.
