‘The price is right’

‘Highly recommend it for anyone’

James Mentzer and his wife, Karen, are UPMC for Life HMO plan members.  They have been spending their vacations on Florida’s west coast for about 10 years, and they have had to deal with an occasional emergency while far from home.

Two years ago Karen was facing emergency back surgery. Her condition was so debilitating there was no way she could fly back home to Moon Township to have the operation performed at a UPMC for Life network hospital.

James called UPMC for Life to tell them about the situation and he found out that UPMC for Life could help. “UPMC for Life was just wonderful,” says James. “We had the operation done there and everything worked out fine.”

James and his wife have had a few other medical emergencies during their Florida visits and have always been pleased with the way UPMC for Life handled the situations.

‘Makes sense’

Robert Isenhart is one of those people who sits down every year and tries to figure out how much he will spend on health care for the coming year. Included in his analysis is a comparison of the various Medicare plans available to him in western Pennsylvania.

“I look every year and compare,” says Robert. “And the others don’t seem to measure up in terms of costs, and in whether or not their networks include the doctors I want.”

Robert and his wife, Diane, also enjoy taking part in the many special events offered by UPMC for Life, such as the bimonthly morning walks at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium in the summer.

But Robert knows he’ll still have to sit down again and study the numbers to determine which Medicare plan works best for him at the end of the year. “I’ll go through the whole thing again to see what makes sense. For me, it’s been UPMC for Life.”
