QUESTION:

I am a UPMC for Life Specialty Plan member, and I think I need to see a specialist. But I want to go right away and I’m concerned that I have to see my PCP first for a referral. Do I need a referral before I see a specialist?

ANSWER:

One of the greatest benefits of being a UPMC for Life Specialty Plan member is that you do not need a referral from your PCP to see a specialist, as long as that specialist is in our network. You also do not need a referral before going to any other network doctor or before seeking care at any network hospital or clinic, like an urgent care center. If you choose to go to a doctor outside of our network, you must pay for these services yourself. Neither UPMC Health Plan nor the Original Medicare plan will pay for these services.

Except in an emergency, you or your physician must obtain prior authorization from UPMC for Life Specialty Plan before you receive out-of-network services. For questions about prior authorization, or for any other questions about your plan, please contact your Health Care Concierge at 1-800-606-8648.
