National Senior Health and Fitness Day a huge success!

Hundreds of UPMC for Life members joined together for the third annual National Senior Health and Fitness Day on May 27, 2009. As state sponsor for the third year in a row, UPMC for Life sponsored three local events in western Pennsylvania. Events were held at the Pittsburgh
Zoo & PPG Aquarium in Pittsburgh, the Penn State Altoona campus, and the new Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine’s (LECOM) Medical Fitness and Wellness Center.

The no-charge events were open to all UPMC for Life members and one Medicare eligible guest. For Pittsburgh guests, activities included health screenings and a low-impact exercise session with Leslie Sansone’s walking team and her In-Home Walking Program. The day’s events were emceed by John Burnett from KDKA-TV.

The Erie event at LECOM Medical Fitness and Wellness Center included Tai Chi and Zumba exercise classes and walks around the fitness center track. In Altoona, UPMC for Life members participated in organized walks around the campus and enjoyed a light lunch courtesy of Blair Senior Services.

“According to a study by the National Institute on Aging, elderly people who are physically active are much more likely to live longer than people who are not physically active,” said Cynthia Rosenberg, MD, senior medical director at UPMC Health Plan. “Events that promote physical activity for seniors are important because inactivity can weaken muscles and exercise can help maintain or improve balance, agility, and posture.”
