Powerful tools for caregivers

For three years Jerry has been taking care of his wife, Margaret. Since her stroke, he prepares her meals, gives her medications, and helps her get dressed. Jerry loves Margaret and would do anything for her, but being her primary caregiver is a tough job. Because Jerry is getting older himself, it gets tougher every day.

Research studies find high rates of depression and anxiety among caregivers and increased vulnerability to health problems. Caregivers often talk about having to give up personal activities and their social life. They often feel like they have no control over events, and feeling powerless has a significant negative impact on their physical and emotional health.

UPMC for Life offers a series of six classes, called Powerful Tools for Caregivers, that can help. Each 90-minute class offers a wealth of tools to reduce your stress level, help you tell other family members and health care personnel what you need, communicate effectively in challenging situations, and deal with difficult feelings, plus make tough caregiving decisions (financial, driving, housing). You will also receive a copy of The Caregiver Helpbook. Interviews from people who have gone through the training sessions revealed the following positive results:

  • Participants began to exercise more, relax more, and take better care of themselves.
  • Participants felt less anger, guilt, and depression.
  • Participants made better use of community services.
  • Participants became more efficient in coping with the demands of being a caregiver.

You will receive information in the mail when classes are available in your area.
