Quick Facts About Medicare

FACT:

Medicare is not automatic. You must apply for it by visiting or calling your local Social Security office.

FACT:

There are three important parts to traditional Medicare:

  • Medicare Part A provides partial coverage for inpatient hospitalization and skilled nursing facility care.
  • Medicare Part B is optional and provides partial coverage for doctor office visits and other medical services.
  • Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage (also called Medicare Part D) became effective January 1, 2006. It can help you save money on your medications. Like Part B, it is optional.

FACT:

UPMC Health Plan is one of the private companies approved by Medicare to offer Medicare's new Prescription Drug Plan to area residents.

FACT:

Affordable plans are available from UPMC Health Plan with more coverage than traditional Medicare, as well as Medicare prescription drug benefits. (Important Note: You must be enrolled in both Medicare Parts A and B and reside in the UPMC for Life service area to be eligible for these UPMC for Life options.)
