 What is Assist America?
Assist America Inc., formed in 1990, is the nation's largest provider of emergency travel assistance services. Although best known for intervening in medical emergencies in foreign countries, its programs are designed to respond when any covered member becomes ill or injured while traveling 100 miles or more away from home.
Assist America's support is available while you are traveling either internationally or domestically. It is accessible 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. There are no caps, limits, or pre-existing condition exclusions for Assist America services. When needed, services are arranged, provided, and paid for by Assist America. Available Assistance
Global Emergency Services When You're Away From Home
In addition to your UPMC for Life coverage, worldwide emergency travel assistance is available to you through Assist America.
Medical Consultation and Evaluation
Your call to the Assist America Operation Center is evaluated by medical staff and referred to English-speaking doctors and/or hospitals.
Hospital Admission Guarantee
Assist America will guarantee hospital admission if you are outside the United States by validating your health coverage. On rare occasions, Assist America may need to advance funds as a deposit toward the medical claim: if so, the funds need not be repaid until your claim is settled.
Emergency Evacuation
Whenever adequate medical facilities are not available locally, Assist America will use whatever mode of transportation, equipment, and personnel necessary to evacuate you to the nearest facility capable of providing proper care.
Critical Care Monitoring
Assist America's team of doctors, nurses, and other medically trained personnel will stay in regular communication with the attending physician and/or hospital and relay information to your family member or friend, as permitted by law.
Medically Supervised Repatriation
If you require medical assistance on returning home after being discharged from the hospital, Assist America will repatriate you and ensure that you are transported to your home or to a rehabilitation facility, with an escort, if medically necessary.
Prescription Assistance
Should you require replacement of prescription medication, Assist America will assist you in obtaining that medicine through local physicians and pharmacies.
Emergency Message Transmission
Assist America will receive and transmit emergency messages, as permitted by law.
Transportation to Join Patient
If you are traveling alone and will be hospitalized for more than seven days, Assist America will provide economy round-trip common carrier transportation to the place of hospitalization for a designated family member or friend.
Return of Mortal Remains
In case of death of a member, Assist America will render every possible assistance in the return of mortal remains, including locating a sending funeral home, preparing the body for transport, procuring required documentation, providing the necessary shipping container, and paying for transportation to the member's legal residence.

One simple phone call puts you in touch with Assist America's highly trained staff, who will ensure your call is handled promptly and will even coordinate with your medical benefit plan.
All available assistance services must be provided and arranged by Assist America. No claims for reimbursement of assistance services will be accepted.
