Ah, spring! The arrival of warmer weather usually means an increase in outdoor activity and the start of the best time of year for many. But it also signals the start of the asthma and allergy season. Those who live with asthma and allergies often dread this time of year.
While there is no cure for asthma or allergies, there is also no need to suffer unreasonably from either disease throughout your life. With the proper treatment, you can usually control your symptoms and continue to lead a healthy, active life.
Medications — including antihistamines and nasal steroid sprays — can be used to help prevent and relieve allergy symptoms. Some allergy medications are available over the counter, others require a prescription. Always talk with your doctor before taking a new allergy medication.
If you have asthma and are a member of one of our plans, our Asthma Health Management program can help you manage your condition by connecting you with a highly qualified UPMC Health Plan health manager. You can expect to receive scheduled telephone calls from your personal health manager, who will give you information about your condition, support you in managing it, remind you about getting timely preventive care and treatment, and coordinate your care with your physician or other health providers when appropriate.
You can also expect:
- Postcard reminders for flu and pneumonia immunizations
- Online health education tools
- Referrals to case managers, health coaches, and behavioral health staff when appropriate
- Annual satisfaction and quality-of-life surveys to help us serve you better
