Get fit in 2007

The new year often brings with it a new commitment to exercise. Many people seem to connect a new year with the chance for a new beginning, and they realize there is no substitute for being more active and more fit.

Getting more exercise is a favorite New Year’s resolution because it can be beneficial in a number of health-related ways. For example, while it cannot cure all ills, regular exercise has been shown to be helpful to someone trying to lose weight, stop smoking, or control blood pressure, glucose, or cholesterol levels. And, if nothing else, exercise simply makes you feel good.

At UPMC Health Plan, we welcome this time of year. We encourage our members to renew their enthusiasm for exercise. We agree with the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, which says: “To put it simply – exercise is one of the best things you can do for your health.” 

As a way to encourage exercise, UPMC Health Plan’s MyHealth program includes an online activity log called “Walk for Fitness.” This booklet provides an easy way to track your activity on a daily basis and helps motivate you to walk 10,000 steps per day.

MyHealth OnLine, powered by WebMD®one of the most respected names in online health information also provides a variety of important health facts, advice, and tools that promote health. Among the free services it provides are health surveys and personalized diet and exercise programs.
