UPMC Health Plan has proudly served the communities of Altoona and Johnstown since 2001. We are committed to the growth and development of these areas not only through the work of our dedicated staff in our Johnstown office, but through the support of organizations that enhance the entire community.
Described below are just a few examples of programs we support in this region. In addition to these, you may read about our other collaborations:
A famous railroad bend isn’t the only “curve” attraction in Altoona! The Altoona Curve baseball team is a minor league affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. This sports organization was inaugurated in the late 1990s and has provided tons of fun for thousands of families in western Pennsylvania every baseball season since. The team also is very active in the community, earning recognition in 2011 for its efforts to raise awareness and funds for Prevent Child Abuse, Pennsylvania. UPMC Health Plan is proud to be a multi-year corporate sponsor of the Altoona Curve. UPMC Health Plan members have the opportunity to redeem a discount on tickets during one game each season as part of the UPMC Health Plan Member Night promotion.
Johnstown Symphony Orchestra
The Johnstown Symphony Orchestra has been in operation since 1929 and brings exceptional music to the families who live in the region. The Symphony boasts a full-scale orchestra complete with string, woodwind, and brass instruments, and a chorale for adults and high school students. It also operates a children’s chorus, a youth orchestra, and various music-education programs. In addition to its regular concert season, the Symphony hosts free public concerts on certain holidays. Its Fourth of July concert had run continuously since 1989 until it was canceled unexpectedly in 2016. In 2017, funding from UPMC Health Plan and other organizations enabled the Symphony to bring back this popular concert, which is held at Point Stadium (home of University of Pittsburgh’s NCAA baseball team) and capped off with fireworks.
Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art (SAMA)
Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art operates four facilities located in Altoona, Johnstown, Ligonier, and Loretto, Pennsylvania. This community art museum showcases thousands of works by local, national, and global artists; hosts annual art exhibitions; and offers robust educational programs for artists and art-lovers of all ages. UPMC Health Plan’s annual support of SAMA assists in procuring new pieces of artwork for the museum and helping budding artists reach their fullest potential.
