‘Farm Kings’ Farmers Market Set for UPMC Passavant

PITTSBURGH (Sept. 9, 2014) – UPMC Health Plan is partnering with Freedom Farms — better known to TV audiences as the “Farm Kings” — to offer a weekly farmers market at UPMC Passavant-Cranberry.

The farmers market is held every Thursday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., in the parking lot of the hospital’s main campus. Locally grown produce and meats will be available for purchase now through the end of October.

Freedom Farms was founded in 2009 by the King family of Butler County. It has grown to include a local market, farmers markets, a donut shop, a sandwich shop, and a national magazine, as well as other commercial endeavors. Since 2012, the family has been featured on “Farm Kings,” a reality TV series on the Great American Country network.

Each week, UPMC Health Plan will be represented at the market by health coaches, dietitians, and member services personnel. In addition to receiving health and nutrition tips, UPMC Health Plan members will be able to discuss service needs and plan information.

The farmer’s market also offers “just in time” recipes for quick and fresh dinners, tips on how to properly store fresh fruits and vegetables for maximum freshness, and information about a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program that can be customized to meet individual needs.

The market, located in the hospital’s parking lot, is open to the public. Every week, all visitors will be able to enter a UPMC Health Plan sweepstakes to be eligible to win $25 of produce or meats.
