Health Coaching

Most of us have an idea of what we need to do in order to lose weight, become more active, or make changes to improve a health condition like diabetes or heart disease. We just don’t do it. What we really need to become healthier is sustained motivation.

That’s where a health coach can help. As a UPMC Health Plan member, you have access to our health coaching program free of charge. You can meet with your health coach as often as needed by telephone. He or she will give you plenty of advice and practical information—and, more importantly, inspire you to take the first step to better health. And the step after that. And the step after that.

  • Come up with a clear goal and create a plan to get there.
  • Make changes that last.
  • Stay motivated.
  • Keep your goal in sight.
  • Overcome obstacles.

What’s the secret to success? Our health coaches use a proven technique called motivational interviewing. This method helps you home in on what truly inspires you to become healthier. Once you have that focus, your journey to better health gets much easier.

Help with your condition

If you’re living with a health condition, we can ease things for you by helping coordinate your care. Our health coaches can help you follow your doctor’s care plan, better understand treatment options identified by your provider, put you in touch with community resources, and help you improve your skills so you can better manage your condition.

Health and Wellness Programs

Research shows that it takes about four weeks for a new behavior change to become a habit. Each of our five lifestyle improvement programs is designed to help you achieve a new health routine that puts you on the road to better health. You can work through these programs with guidance from a health coach or on your own—any way you prefer. Programs include:

MyHealth Less Stress™ 6 sessions:

Develop a specific plan to improve work-life balance and better handle the stresses that arise each day. Learn about both good and bad stress and how to use strategies, skills, and relaxation techniques to boost your coping skills.

MyHealth Weigh to Wellness™ 8 sessions:

Learn to balance your food intake with your physical activity to manage your weight over the long term. Includes techniques to help you make wise food choices, build activity levels, and replace unhealthy eating habits with healthy ones—one good habit at a time.

MyHealth Eating Well™ 6 sessions:

Create a personalized eating plan that will guide you to make healthy food selections, maintain a healthy weight, and decrease your risk of chronic disease. You’ll also have access to hundreds of nutrition articles and healthy, tasty recipes.

MyHealth Step Up to Wellness™ 6 sessions:

Assess your current fitness level with a personalized survey, create a tailored activity plan, and enjoy working with a virtual personal trainer who guides you to log your activity and track your progress.

MyHealth Ready to Quit™ 6 sessions:

Become empowered to quit using tobacco with a personal action plan that includes techniques for changing behavior and proven tools based on the latest research. You’ll be guided every step of the way, and you will be ready for your “Quit Day.”
