What is the UPMC for Life Flex Spend Card and how does it work?

The UPMC for Life Flex Spend Card gives members additional dollars to help them stay healthy and independent. Members can use their Flex Spend Card when they need to for things like, doctor’s office copays, fitness, over-the-counter products, and dental, vision, and hearing services. It works just like a prepaid debit card!

Here are all the ways members can use their Flex Spend Card to support their health and wellness through the benefit year:

Medical service costs — The Flex Spend Card can be used to pay for out-of-pocket medical service costs, like doctor’s office visits, urgent care visits, physical therapy, lab services, x-rays, and more.

Premier fitness — The Flex Spend Card can be used to pay for memberships, classes, and other activities at any of our participating premier fitness locations, like Club Pilates, Orangetheory Fitness, CycleBar, and Wilfred R. Cameron Wellness Center. Members will also be able to use their card to buy one fitness kit per year.

Over-the-counter (OTC) products — The Flex Spend Card can be used to buy covered products at both participating retail stores and through our mail-order catalog. Examples of some covered products include cold and allergy medicines, digestive health remedies, ear and eye care, vitamins and dietary supplements, and pain relievers.

Home safety products — The Flex Spend Card can be used to buy home safety products through our mail-order catalog. Some product options include bed rails, dressing aids, grab bars, shower chairs and transfer benches, and tub rails.

Dental, vision, and hearing services — Members can use their card in addition to their dental, vision, and hearing allowances and plan benefits. It is accepted at any provider that accepts Mastercard. Here are some examples of services:

Dental services — Teeth whitening, dental implants, dentures, root canals, bridges, crowns, and more.
Vision services — Contact lenses, eyeglasses, progressive and transition lenses, prescription sunglasses, and more.
Hearing services — Hearing aids, hearing aid batteries, hearing aid repairs, and more.

Important UPMC for Life Flex Spend Card resources

The Flex Spend Card is a yearly allowance, not a quarterly allowance. Allowances will not roll over from year to year. Allowance amounts vary based on plan type and service area. Not all plans or service areas offer a UPMC for Life Flex Spend Card.

The Flex Spend Card can not be used to pay for Part D prescription drug copays or plan premiums.
